Professor Gene Collerd recently received Emeritus status, an honor that recognizes outstanding professors for their years of dedication to teaching, service, and scholarship/creative practice. Mr. Collerd officially retired last May, but is still teaching and serving as Coordinator of Music. ---- David Morrison, Concert Band Director, recently received The John Philip Sousa
Foundation Legion of Honor Award at the 65th Annual Midwest Band and
Orchestra Clinic at McCormick Place West on December 14-17, 2011. The Legion
of Honor Award was established by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to
recognize and honor band directors who have maintained school concert band
programs of excellent musical quality for a period of at least 20 years and who
have held important positions of leadership in their professional organization. Mr. Stoltzman will also perform at Oakton College in Des Plaines, IL on January 27, 2012 at 8pm. Come out and enjoy a warm evening of jazz favorites from Duke Ellington to Dizzy Gillespie. Oakton College is located at 1600 East Golf Road, Des Plaines, IL. Mr. Stoltzman will be recording in New York City March 28-31, 2012 with artists such as Will Lee, Marcus Gilmore, and others. In August 2011, Julie Koidin, Adjunct Lecturer of Music, received her fifth Fulbright award; a Specialist Grant to teach a flute course at Flöjtmani in Arvika, Sweden. She taught the U.S. repertoire for flute, chamber music, gave private lessons and performed in a faculty concert at the Rackstadmuseet in Ingesund, Sweden. See UIC News article here. ---- ---- ---- ---- Zvonimir Tot, Visiting Assistant Professor, has been invited to present a lecture/clinic on the methodology of teaching jazz guitar harmony at the annual conference of the Jazz Education Network in Louisville, Kentucky on January 5, 2012. ---- Elbio selected the text and provided a structure, textures and themes for the group's collective improvisation.
Flags From Ashes will air on WFMT 98.7 on Sunday Sept. 11 between 4.30 pm and 5.30 pm.
The new work is based on two texts:
-a narrative by Spanish writer Antonio Munoz Molina, adapted by American writer David Landau and read by WFMT's Peter Whorf
-excerpts from Dirge For Two Veterans, by Walt Whitman, sang in English by Amy Conn and said by Elbio Barilari, in Spanish.

Neal McCollam has been honored with the 2011 UIC Award of Merit, a campus wide honor whereby exceptional academic professionals and support staff are recognized for their sustained excellence in performance and their commitment to their jobs.

Due to a family emergency, Kedgrick Pullums, music major with the ----- On January 15th and 16th, UIC's improv team Red Ligh School District This was the first time Red Light made it this far in the competition. Columbia College Chicago ended up winning the final, but Red Light had a strong showing, making them one of the top four improv teams in the state. ----- -----
