DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND MUSIC MISSION STATEMENT
Mission:
The Department of Theatre and Music provides innovative, rigorous, and comprehensive academic and performance programs as part of its diverse, urban context. These programs develop practical knowledge, cultural sensitivity, intellectual resourcefulness, and imaginative daring in emerging artists and scholars. They connect students to Chicago’s abundant, vibrant theatre culture and to the city’s dynamic jazz and classical music networks. The programs strive to:
- Prepare theatre and music students for professional careers in the arts, or for entry to highly competitive advanced degree programs
- Provide conservatory-style training for promising students and engage them in a range of professional practices including collaborations with artists, performance ensembles, and other cultural institutions in Chicago and beyond
- Provide nurturing instruction that encourages emerging artists and scholars to explore and expand current methodologies
- Enlighten students about theatre and music as essential points of access to verbal and non-verbal forms of communication and artistic expression
- Provide students from other disciplines with tools and perspectives to understand theatre and music of the past and present
- Provide education that values artistic integrity, discovery, self-discipline, and process
- Support the university's commitment to diversity by exposing students to performing arts traditions from around the world and by emphasizing the changing role of the arts in an increasingly globalized community
- Provide under-served youth, especially those in Chicago Public Schools, with outreach programs that foster talent, responsibility, leadership, and understanding of the arts
- Create student and faculty work that engages evolving audiences, emphasizing the interconnectedness of art and humanity
- Enrich the culture of the campus, its neighboring communities, and greater Chicago with plays, concerts, and other performances
- Produce artists who will engage as leaders and collaborators in projects and institutions that enrich the culture and enhance the quality of life in Chicago, Illinois, and beyond.
