The Theatre curriculum emphasizes a balance between practice and theory from originating impulse or idea to realization in performance. The areas of Acting, Voice, Movement, Physical Theatre Techniques, Directing, Playwriting, and Design within the context of their artistic, social, political, and historical environments form the nucleus of the curriculum.
Emphasis is placed on the integration of traditional performance forms and theories, and by focus on interdisciplinary relationships evident in contemporary performance practices.
Students participate in the UIC performance programs including a Main Season of produced performances, Expanded Arts Theatre ensemble, and student generated projects.
Performance facilities include a flexible "black box" theatre, a dance studio and other experimental performance spaces.

Curricula
The theatre curriculum offers a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Both combine the study of acting, directing and design with the study of dramatic texts in their theatrical and cultural contexts. The B.A. offers two tracks, performance and directing/design. The B.F.A. is performance track only.
Since theatre is studied and experienced as a present-tense event, majors must actively participate in the production program. A total of 120 semester hours is required for graduation. Students choose one of the major tracks below (45 hours).
Note: Some theatre courses require grades of "B" or higher in courses listed as prerequisites. Please check the course descriptions in the courses listing for more information.

Admission is by audition for the BFA and the
BA Performance Track or interview for the BA in Directing/Design.

Minor in Theatre
Students from other disciplines who want to minor in theatre must complete at least 18 hours in theatre. At least 12 of the 18 hours must be at the upper division level.
General Education Requirement
The general education requirement is 24 semester hours with a minimum of 6 semester hours of humanities, 6 hours of social sciences, 6 hours of natural sciences, and an additional 6 hours in one or more of these three areas. The student must also fulfill the Cultural Diversity requirement by choosing one course from the Cultural Diversity List. The University requirement of two semesters of writing will be fulfilled with the courses English 160 and 161 (English Composition I and II) each 3 semester hours.
