This summer, the School of Art and Design, the School of Architecture and the Department of Theatre and Music will jointly conduct Thinking, Drawing, Moving, Making. This intensive 5-week immersion studio workshop is free and open only to admitted beginning Freshmen students who will enter the School of Art and Design, the School of Architecture or the Department of Theatre and Music' first year programs in Fall 2011. Students from other colleges will be admitted pending space availability on a first come, first served basis.
Thinking, Drawing, Moving, Making runs from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays beginning June 20, 2011. The last class will meet July 22. This workshop will introduce craft, drawing, video, sound, model making, photography, and movement as well as other critical creation and reflection skills. Planned walking tours will serve to familiarize students with UIC and its local environment. Items gathered and photographed on the walking tours will be incorporated into subsequent visual, architectural and performance based exercises. Many of the supplies will be provided, however students may need to provide some of the necessary materials. Students will be expected to participate in some off campus activities/field trips and may need to use public transportation. Past field trips have included the Chicago Architectural Foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Redmoon Theatre Buildshop. The course will culminate towards a grand finale involving an exhibition of the students’ work.
This experience will serve as a great introduction to UIC’s art programs and will aid in the student’s transition out of high school by exposing them to the higher levels of expectations held by universities. The specific course work and projects will enable students to gain an interdisciplinary overview of the professional and educational career opportunities in architecture and the arts. In addition, students will have the opportunity to meet and build relationships with other incoming Freshmen. Two mandatory summer college seminars will also help students gain insights into life within a university setting.
The instructors for the summer program will be Bryant Pitak (School of Architecture), Neal McCollam (Department of Theatre and Music) and Adan Madrigal and Masooma Khan (School of Art and Design). The reception/final exhibition of the students’ work will take place in the afternoon of July 22.
Students will be admitted pending space availability on a first come, first served basis. On-campus housing will be available for students who would have difficulties commuting and would still like to participate.
