URBAN LEGENDS / RURAL MYTHS

UIC Theatre’s 2011-2012 performance season is a gripping celebration of the passions and intoxicating humor of living and loving in times of war and peace and what’s in-between.   Four spectacularly entertaining and provocative plays reflect the universal human quest for a compassionate and meaningful present.

Our 2011-2012 season is catapulted into action by Mark Medoff’s  Obie Award and Drama Circle Award-winning When You Comin’ Back Red Ryder? Mesmerizing, humorous, intoxicating, and unsettling, the season’s theme of Urban Legends/Rural Myths is rocket-launched when a returning war vet enters a small rural American community causing havoc to its illusion of a classic American hero.

Winter is ushered in with the transcendent The Winter’s Tale--Shakespeare’s great, play of loss and redemption that propels us spectacularly into a world of cruel kings, wronged children and miraculously reunited families that anticipates the mythological world of the Brothers Grimm.

Hailed as “…the best playwright in America under forty…” Stephen Aldy Guirgis shimmers with his startlingly Our Lady of 121st Street—a funny, tender and unflinching depiction of the hardscrabble streets of America’s urban landscape and the gulf between who we are and who we perceive ourselves to be.

Rounding out UIC’s newest season is both homage to and a raucous departure from Bertolt Brecht’s brilliant fable, The Caucasian Chalk Circle.   Charles Mee’s captivating flip-side  Full Circle is a masterfully rough and sprawling romp between the shores of cartoon and dream.

2011-2012 joyously continues our on-going commitment to provide audiences with funny and ferocious performances that marry tradition with innovation, comfort with challenge, and the familiar with the new.
