DTM's programs:

  • value artistic integrity, discovery, self-discipline, and process
  • prepare theatre and music students for professional careers in the arts, or for entry to highly competitive advanced degree programs.
  • create student and faculty work that engages evolving audiences, emphasizing the interconnectedness of art and humanity

The Music curriculum offers thorough grounding in theory, history and literature, ear-training, piano skills, and ethnomusicology. Its BA program options include Jazz Studies, Performance, and Basic Music Studies. Music students participate in performance ensembles including The UIC Choirs, Jazz Ensemble, Concert Band, and several chamber music groups.

The Theatre curriculum emphasizes a balance between practice and theory, with courses in technical theatre, movement, voice, and scene study, as well as history, contemporary performance techniques, and adapting literature for the stage.  Program options include a BA in Performance or Design, and a BFA in Performance.

DTM is an exciting place—our faculty and teaching staff hold national and international credentials as artists, teachers, and/or scholars (see our faculty page) and their work infuses our classrooms with energy and inspiration. Coursework is enriched by master classes, several concert series, and theatrical performances that are open to the public. Browse our pages to see what our faculty and students are up to!
